NAIA national champion Marian University has hired Mark Henninger as its football coach.

Henninger is leaving North Carolina Wesleyan of NCAA Division III. He succeeds Ted Karras Jr., who had been the only coach in Marian's seven-year football history. Karras took the coaching job at Walsh one week after winning the national championship.

Henninger's hiring was announced Thursday by athletic director Steve Downing.

In five seasons at North Carolina Wesleyan, Henninger went 26-25. He was the USA South Conference coach of the year in his second season after winning the school's second league title.

Henninger is from Indianapolis. He also has been an assistant at Wittenberg University in Ohio, Wartburg College in Iowa and with the Hamburg Blue Devils Football Club in Germany.
