The 14-time Grand Slam champion dropped after losing to Andy Murray in Sunday's final at the Madrid Masters. The Spanish great had been a mainstay in the Top 5 since May 2005.
The world No. 7 Nadal, who lost for the fourth time on clay this year, is hoping to win his 10th French Open title when that major commences later this month.
Australian Open and Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic is the world's No. 1 star for the 41st straight week, followed by Wimbledon runner-up Roger Federer, the Aussie Open runner-up Murray, Milos Raonic and Tomas Berdych.
U.S. Open runner-up Kei Nishikori, the Roland Garros champ Nadal, David Ferrer, Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic round out the Top 10.
The highest-ranked American is John Isner, at No. 17.
