In his first few games with NYCFC, one of Major League Soccer’s newest teams, the Spanish superstar David Villa has assisted or scored all three of the team’s goals and led them to the top spot in the Eastern Conference with five points.
And he appears to be enjoying himself—making pinpoint passes, passing by defenders at will and taking the sorts of risks on the pitch that he probably would have been taken to task for while playing at Atlético Madrid, Barcelona or any of the other Spanish league teams he has starred for.
Fox News Latino caught up with Villa, 33, the Spanish national team’s all-time leading scorer, after NYCFC’s 2-0 dismantling of MLS Cup runner-up New England at Yankee Stadium, after which fans took up the chant, “Villa, Villa, maravilla!” ("Villa, Villa, what a marvel!”)
“That [chant] started many years ago in Asturias, Spain,” Villa told FNL, “at my first professional team Sporting Gijón. It gives me great joy that they are doing it here. All we have to do is keep working hard so [NYCFC fans] stay that happy.”
Asked how he likes his new team’s chances this season, he is both optimistic and guarded.
“We’re a new team but the object is to win,” Villa said. “People have put a lot of money, support and work into this club, getting the best players. I think we have potential to reach the final, looking at our team and other teams. We are going to fight for it.”
