St. Louis, MO – Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton will apparently miss the next 4-to-6 weeks after leaving Saturday's game with a knee injury.
Stanton sat out a majority of this week with the injury and returned to the field Saturday for the first time, but was pulled after only two innings. Reports say he will undergo surgery to remove bone chips from the knee.
Manager Ozzie Guillen told reporters of the injury and Stanton's impending procedure.
The slugger was set to participate in both the All-Star Game and the Home Run Derby and was viewed as one of the favorites for the latter event, given his premier power.
The National League replaced him on the roster with 19-year-old phenom Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals. Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen will take Stanton's spot in the derby.
Stanton, only 22, has been having a great season for the Marlins with 19 homers to go with a .364 on-base percentage and .554 slugging percentage in 80 games. The slugging mark ranks seventh in the National League.
