Coral Gables, FL – Miami-Florida center Reggie Johnson was declared ineligible by the university following an investigation that found members of his family received impermissible travel benefits from a member of the former Hurricanes basketball coaching staff.
Johnson was unaware of the benefits uncovered in a join NCAA-Miami probe and his family was told they were allowed by the former member of the coaching staff, the university said Sunday.
The 6-foot-10 junior was ruled ineligible ahead of Sunday's game against No. 15 Florida State. Miami is seeking his immediate reinstatement by the NCAA.
Johnson, who declared for the NBA Draft last year before withdrawing his name, is averaging 10.6 points and 6.9 rebounds in 17 games. He had surgery last summer to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and missed some time.
