Flushing, NY – The New York Mets on Friday placed outfielder day disabled list with a left oblique strain, retroactive to August 24.
Hairston underwent an MRI on Wednesday which showed the extent of the injury. In 79 games with the Mets this season he is hitting .235 with seven home runs and 24 RBI.
To fill the roster spot, the Mets selected the contract of pitcher Miguel Batista from Triple-A Buffalo.
Batista is 3-0 with a 4.24 earned run average and 36 strikeouts in 10 games with Buffalo, including eight starts. The 40-year-old started the season with the St. Louis Cardinals, going 3-2 with a 4.60 ERA in 26 appearances.
