Barcelona, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez both scored a pair of goals on Tuesday to lead Barcelona to a comfortable 6-0 rout of Getafe at the Camp Nou.
After easily handling their cross-town rivals, Espanyol, with a 2-0 win on Saturday, the Catalan giants entered the clash hoping to extend their lead atop the La Liga table to five points over second-place Real Madrid, which plays on Wednesday.
It took the hosts just nine minutes to open the scoring when Suarez was felled in the box and Messi easily dispatched the ensuing penalty kick. Suarez netted in the 25th minute to double the lead and Neymar added a third goal three minutes later.
Xavi Hernandez struck for the hosts on the half-hour mark and Suarez added his second of the day five minutes prior to the break as the Catalans took the commanding 5-0 advantage into the dressing room.
But the halftime break did little to help the visitors as Messi completed his double seven minutes into the second period.
Getafe failed to create many quality scoring chances in the second half as Barcelona cruised to all three points, extending their winning streak across all competitions to five matches.
Also in La Liga on Tuesday, Aritz Aduriz and Alberto de la Bella traded goals as Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad played to a 1-1 draw, while David Barral's first-half goal pushed Levante to a 1-0 win over Cordoba.
