The Oakland Athletics have stripped the interim year contract through the 2014 season.
Melvin replaced Bob Geren on June 9 with the Athletics mired in a nine-game losing streak and last in the American League West with a mark of 27-36. He has posted a record of 42-50 through Wednesday's loss against Texas.
A native of nearby Palo Alto, California, Melvin has also managed the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks. He has an overall record of 535-558 in eight seasons as a big league skipper.
Melvin spent the 2003 and '04 seasons with the Mariners and posted a mark of 156-168, then had a 337-340 record with Arizona from 2005-09. He led the Diamondbacks to the NL West title in 2007 and was selected as the league's top manager, but was fired in May of 2009 after the team opened 12-17.
The 49-year-old was a journeyman catcher for 10 seasons in the majors with the Tigers, Giants, Orioles, Royals, Red Sox, Yankees and White Sox. He hit .233 with 35 homers and 212 runs batted in from 1985-94.
