Conor McGregor is already set up for one of the biggest fights of 2015 when he faces Jose Aldo in the main event of UFC 194, but from the look of things on Friday he's already setting himself up for future fights in the lightweight division as well.
Earlier in the week while appearing on UFC Tonight, McGregor mentioned that he was interested in beating Aldo and then moving up to the lightweight division to tackle the best fighters in the world at 155 pounds.
He also took aim at both the champion Rafael dos Anjos and No. 1 contender Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone by claiming that neither of them have the ability to pull in the kind of numbers he does whenever he fights.
It didn't take long for McGregor's comments to find their way to dos Anjos and Cerrone, who appeared alongside the interim featherweight champion at the UFC's "Go Big" press conference on Friday.
"Right now my focus is on Cerrone. If he wants to move up, I'm here. It's going to be easy money," dos Anjos said about McGregor.
McGregor quickly interjected and asked dos Anjos if he had the opportunity to abandon the fight with Cerrone and face him instead would he do it. McGregor continued to poke and prod the lightweight champion while insisting that dos Anjos would make a far better payday to fight him than anyone at 155 pounds.
"Ask yourself truthfully -- if Dana rang you and said you don't have to fight Cerrone, you can fight McGregor, even though Cerrone would still fight, would you take it? You're damn right you'd take it. Because I'd change your bum life. I'd make you rich," McGregor shouted. "I'd change your bum life. You fight me, it's a celebration. You ring back home, you ring your wife, 'Baby we done it, we're rich, baby. Conor McGregor made us rich! Break out the red panties! We're rich, baby.'
"Don't say you would not take that fight, 'cause you would take that fight like everyone else up here would take the fight against me if it was offered. Regardless of belts or any of that s---. I'm the money fight in the male s--- out of all the weight divisions so f--- everybody else up here."
Once McGregor finished targeting dos Anjos, he took aim at Cerrone, who was sitting directly behind him on the dais.
Cerrone fired off the first salvo at McGregor by warning the Irish fighter that he might want to stay at 145 pounds before biting off a little more than he can chew.
"Conor has no right coming up to '55. There's no way, he's not going to stand a chance. We're too big for him, we're too strong. So you can take your little English ass and go on," Cerrone said.
"He's real good talking out in front of the public but when we were all standing in the back up there, he had nothing to say. I stood back there for 30 minutes right next to him and nothing to say to me, but he was very cordial with my man next to me (pointing to Chad Mendes). He comes to 155, I'm going to bend his little ass over and knock the f---ing Lucky Charms out."
McGregor quickly fired back at Cerrone by taking a shot at his previous loss to dos Anjos ahead of their rematch on Dec. 19 match in Orlando while contemplating a fight between them at some point down the road as well.
"First you've got to get through a guy who whooped your ass already," McGregor said. "You're fighting a guy who whooped your ass next. You've got to come through that and then I'll consider, I'll check the numbers, I'll discuss it with Frank (Fertitta) and I'll decide whether I'll change your bum life as well.
"You're too slow and too stiff. You're stiff as a board. I'd snap you in half and that's it. I see stiffness when I look in that 155-pound division. Slow, stiff, I feel like they're stuck in the mud almost. The featherweights, they hit like flyweights so it's nice down there just destroying them and killing that whole division.
"I have my eye on that 155-pound division and I see them all stuck in the mud in there. We'll see over time."
McGregor finished off his conversation about the lightweight division by reminding everybody in attendance that no matter how outlandish his statements might seem, he's yet to make a prediction that didn't come true.
"Have I been wrong yet?" McGregor shouted. "Have I been wrong yet? No."
