ORONO, Maine – Chris De La Rosa scored 24 points and had a career-high 13 assists to lead Maryland-Baltimore County over Maine 84-79 on Sunday.
Justin Fry added a career-high 20 points for the Retrievers (5-19, 4-7 America East Conference), who trailed 49-35 55 seconds into the second half. UMBC then outscored the Black Bears (14-9, 8-3) 18-2 over the next 5:50 for its first lead of the game, 53-51.
De La Rosa scored or assisted on all but two of the points during the run.
Maine reclaimed the lead 58-55 with 9:23 left, but De La Rosa tied it on a three-point play and then fed Adrian Satchell to give UMBC the lead for good, 60-58, with 7:58 to play.
Fry, who was 9-of-10 shooting in just 20 minutes because of foul trouble, scored 14 points in the second half. Satchell added 12 points and Laurence Jolicoeur 11 for the Retrievers.
Gerald McLemore led Maine with 24 points.
