NEWARK, New Jersey (Reuters) - New Jersey netminder Martin Brodeur made 32 saves as the Devils beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-0 in a showdown of the Atlantic Division's two best teams on Wednesday.
The shutout was Brodeur's second in a row against the Penguins after he blanked the defending Stanley Cup champions 4-0 on December 21 to break the league shutout record he had shared with Terry Sawchuk.
It also lifted his career total to 105 shutouts and gave the Devils their fourth win over the Penguins in as many matches this season.
"When you play them, you want to get a win," Brodeur told reporters.
"It's another matchup here that was of big importance for our hockey club to see where we're at (and) we responded real well."
The victory completed a memorable day for the 37-year-old Brodeur after he was named in the Canada team for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
"At my age, to get picked and be one of the top three goalies to defend our country in the Olympics is something pretty cool," he said.
Niclas Bergfors gave the Eastern Conference leaders a 1-0 lead inside two minutes then Jamie Langenbrunner added an empty netter with 12 seconds to play to hand Pittsburgh their third straight defeat.
On Bergfors's goal, Travis Zaja jarred the puck loose with a forecheck of Pittsburgh defenseman Mark Eaton behind the Pittsburgh net.
Bergfors got the loose puck and shot from the right corner for his 13th goal of the season, second among NHL rookies.
"The intensity was like a playoff game," Brodeur said.
"Guys were going to the net, lot of good scoring chances on both sides, good saves from both goalies. It was a fun game to be part of."
Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby made Brodeur work for one of his saves, getting off a backhand attempt in the third but the netminder gloved the shot.
The Devils allowed the pair a combined five shots and in the four-game series have only allowed the two Penguins two assists, both by Crosby.
"Every time you're able to shut down some of the key players on the other side, especially the likes of Crosby and (Evgeni) Malkin, guys are doing their jobs in a good way," Brodeur said.
"We've done a great job on both these guys so far in the series."
