With the naming of Matt Klentak as Philadelphia Phillies general manager, every GM search in baseball has concluded. There is uncertainty surrounding the contract of Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos, which expires Saturday, but all is quiet . . . for now.
Except, of course, in Miami.
By now, Dan Jennings was supposed to resume his role as GM of the Marlins -- the role he vacated in May to become the team's field manager. Well, that hasn't happened. Sources say Jennings is not currently coming to the office at Marlins Park, interviewing managerial candidates or functioning as the general manager.
Perhaps even more telling, his name does not appear on the organization's masthead at marlins.com -- a web page updated as recently as last week to reflect the hiring of Jim Benedict as vice president of pitching.
Jennings' relationship with owner Jeffrey Loria deteriorated during his tenure as field manager, which ended with the conclusion of the 2015 season. Jennings is under contract through 2018, but the team has yet to clarify what his role will be in 2016.
Michael Hill is the Marlins' president of baseball operations, as he had been prior to Jennings' move to the dugout. Mike Berger, the Marlins' vice president and assistant general manager, is the next highest-ranking official in the team's baseball operations department. No one currently holds the title of general manager.
Meanwhile, the team's search for Jennings' replacement as the field manager moves forward. The Marlins consider Don Mattingly a top candidate for that job; he is free to interview with them after his mutual parting with the Los Angeles Dodgers last week, sources have told Ken Rosenthal and me. Because Mattingly had a contract with the Dodgers for 2016, his salary with the Marlins likely would be subject to offset if he is hired there.
