SEATTLE (Reuters) - Seattle Mariners pitcher Cliff Lee has had minor surgery on his left foot that will delay the start of his pre-season workouts, the club said.
The surgery, to remove a bone spur, means the left-handed Lee will be sidelined for two to three weeks and will not participate in workouts when the Mariners' pitchers and catchers camp starts in Peoria, Arizona on February 18, Major League Baseball's official website (www.mlb.com) reported.
"We decided Lee should have the surgery as soon as possible, rather than try to pitch with the discomfort during the year," general manager Jack Zduriencik said.
Lee, the 2008 American League Cy Young Award winner with Cleveland, was acquired by the Mariners in December from Philadelphia.
