Liverpool midfielder Lucas will miss the rest of the English Premier League season after he damaged the ACL in his left knee in Tuesday's Carling Cup win over Chelsea.
The Brazilian will undergo surgery, and be sidelined at least six months. That rules him out for the remainder of the season, leaving Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish without an important piece in midfield.
The 24-year-old had started 12 of Liverpool's 13 league games this season. His injury happened during the 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge, and he was taken off on a stretcher.
Scans later showed the extent of the injury, and will make Liverpool's bid for a top-four spot and a Champions League berth from the EPL even tougher.
Liverpool is sixth in the standings, three points behind Newcastle for fourth, and 12 points behind leader Manchester City.
