Osaka, Japan (SportsNetwork.com) - Second-seeded German Sabine Lisicki was among the first-round winners Tuesday, while fourth seed Flavia Pennetta exited the HP Open tennis event.
Lisicki beat South African Chanelle Scheepers by a 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) margin. Next up for the Wimbledon runner-up will be Slovenian Polona Hercog, who outlasted Czech Petra Cetkovska 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.
American lucky loser Vania King took down the Italian Pennetta by a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 score, while another upset occurred when heavy Japanese crowd favorite Kimiko Date-Krumm discarded seventh-seeded Brit Laura Robson 6-4, 6-4. The 43- year-old Date-Krumm was the 2010 runner-up in Osaka.
American Madison Keys, the No. 6 seed, moved on with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Slovakian qualifier Anna Schmiedlova, while ninth-seeded Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic topped Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
Other winners Tuesday were Zheng Jie and Zhang Shuai of China, Swiss qualifier Belinda Bencic, Thai qualifier Luksika Kumkhum, and Czech qualifier Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
