Mexico City, Mexico (SportsNetwork.com) - Leon captured its first Mexican title in 21 years by securing a 3-1 second-leg win over America in the final for a 5-1 aggregate victory.
After notching a 2-0 first-leg win at home on Thursday Leon entered the contest in poll position, and extended that lead after 12 minutes through Mauro Boselli.
America was handed a lifeline shortly before halftime when Leon defender Ignacio Gonzalez redirected a shot from Rubens Sambueza into his own net.
But Leon played a man up for the final 35 minutes after America defender Francisco Rodriguez was sent off, allowing the visitors to add two goals to seal the win with both Gonzalez and Edwin Hernandez each finding the net.
Leon wins the title for the first time since 1992 after being promoted this season, while America manager Miguel Herrera failed capture a second straight crown and he will now turn his attention to managing the Mexican national team.
