Mike Leach agreed to a five-year contract on Wednesday to become the new head football coach at Washington State.
The offensive-minded coach replaces Paul Wulff, who was fired Tuesday after amassing a 9-40 record in four seasons.
"I have always admired the tradition of Washington State. It's a university on the move that is experiencing growth. I'm excited about what they are doing with the facilities and it's a team that has battled through some hard times and shows great promise in the future," Leach said.
The 50-year-old Leach compiled an 84-43 record at Texas Tech before he was dismissed in December 2009 in the wake of allegations regarding the treatment of a player's injury.
The best season his 10-year reign in Lubbock was 2008, when he led the program to a school record-tying 11 wins and had them ranked as high as second in the nation.
"I asked athletic director Bill Moos to select the best head football coach in the country and I am convinced that he has done exactly that," said WSU president Elson S. Floyd.
Before starting his tenure with the Red Raiders, Leach was an offensive coordinator at Oklahoma (1999) and Kentucky (1997-98).
