The Lafayette University football program will play an FBS opponent for the first time since 1997 when it begins a two-game series against Army beginning in 2016.

The Leopards have not met an FBS opponent since they played Army on Sept. 13, 1997.

The first game of the series is scheduled for Oct. 15, 2016, while the second matchup will be played on Oct. 6, 2018. Both games will be played at Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y.

Army holds a 17-1 series advantage.

"We're looking forward to the chance to play against an FBS school like Army," said Lafayette coach Frank Tavini, who was an assistant coach with the Leopards when they faced Army in the 1980s and '90s. "They have a tremendous atmosphere in West Point, and it's in a location that will allow our fans to make the trip."

Lafayette has added its first football scholarship class this year.
