Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands won the women's 100-meter freestyle Thursday night while breaking her own Olympic record.
Kromowidjojo went up and back in the Aquatics Centre pool in 53 seconds flat, trimming .05 seconds off the record she set Wednesday.
She beat Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus by .38 seconds while China's Tang won the bronze.
Missy Franklin, after swimming in semifinals for the 200-meter backstroke earlier in the night, made up time in the last 50 meters but came in fifth.
She was trying to become the first American woman to win the event since Carolyn Steinseifer and Nancy Lynn Hogshead tied for the gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Nathan Adrian won the men's 100 free Wednesday night, the first American of either gender since Matt Biondi in 1988 to win at the distance.
