Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Kings recalled former All-Star center Mike Richards from their AHL affiliate in Manchester on Sunday.
Richards was placed on waivers and then sent to the minors for the first time in his career back on Jan. 27 largely for salary-cap considerations. In 16 games with the Monarchs, the 30-year-old center tallied 14 points (3G, 11A).
He is owed $23 million over the final four years of his contract and counts for $5.75 million against the cap, the apparent reason he was not picked up by another team.
Prior to the demotion, Richards had seen his production decline, totaling just five goals and 15 points in 47 games for Los Angeles this season. He was an All-Star in 2008 with the Philadelphia Flyers and recorded a career-high 80 points in the 2008-09 season.
In his 10-year career, Richards has 179 goals and 481 points in 704 games. He has won two Stanley Cups with Los Angeles, won an Olympic gold medal with Team Canada in 2010 and served as the Flyers' captain from 2008-11.
