Kaia Kanepi surprised top-seeded Roberta Vinci on Friday to reach the final at the $220,000 Estoril Open tennis event.
The sixth-seeded Kanepi upended the Italian Vinci 6-2, 7-5 and will now meet Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro in Saturday's finale at National Stadium. Suarez Navarro handled qualifier and fellow non-seed Karin Knapp of Italy, 6-4, 6-0, as Italians went 0-2 on Day 5.
The 26-year-old Kanepi, who hails from Estonia, will appear in her sixth career final, seeking a third championship. She titled in Brisbane back in January.
Suarez Navarro is a 23-year-old from Spain and will compete in her third career WTA final, seeking a first championship. This marks her first final since 2010.
The world No. 34 Kanepi and 58th-ranked Suarez Navarro split their previous two meetings on tour and have never met on clay.
The winner of this clay-court French Open tune-up will take home $37,000.
