Jets eye 3rd win in a row in clash with Sabres

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Winnipeg Jets will try to win three straight for the first time in well over a month when they host the Buffalo Sabres in Tuesday's clash at MTS Centre.

Winnipeg is coming off consecutive wins and posted a 2-1 overtime win in its last game Sunday night at Colorado. The Jets are on their first two-game win streak since Nov. 25-27 and the club hasn't notched three victories in a row since a 4-0 stretch from Nov. 8-15.

Blake Wheeler scored in the closing seconds of OT to send the Jets to a win Sunday in Denver, notching the game-winner at the 4:58 mark of the extra session. On the winner, Wheeler scored from the low slot after Mark Scheifele fed him a pass from the right side.

Wheeler said he had "no idea" there was that little time left.

"I knew it was close to the end," he said. "Monty (Jets goaltender Al Montoya) made a great save at our end and I knew we had one more whack at it."

Andrew Ladd netted the game's first goal for Winnipeg 11:42 into the third period. Montoya ended with 33 saves for Winnipeg, including five in overtime.

"I thought this was a good road win for us," said Ladd. "We kept getting the pucks deep tonight and when we keep doing something over and over again something good comes from it."

The Jets will also aim for a third straight win on home ice tonight. Winnipeg is just 9-8-4 on home ice this season.

Buffalo is also coming off a win, as it outlasted the Washington Capitals in Sunday's shootout victory in Western New York. Steve Ott scored the game- winner in the sixth round of the shootout to lead the Sabres in a 2-1 win over the Capitals at First Niagara Center. Drew Stafford scored the only goal in regulation for Buffalo.

After the first 10 shooters missed, Ott blasted the puck over the right shoulder of Philipp Grubauer before Ryan Miller turned back Mike Green to end the game.

Miller stopped 49 shots in regulation and overtime and all six in the shootout for the Sabres, who were outshout by a wide 50-17 margin through regulation and overtime.

"It feels good when they stay out and get a win like that," said Miller.

Jhonas Enroth will be in net tonight for the Sabres, as he gives Miller a breather after his busy day on Sunday.

The Sabres had lost six straight in the series against the Jets before posting a 4-2 home win over Winnipeg on Dec. 17. Miller stopped 25-of-27 shots in the win for Buffalo.

The Sabres, who are 3-12-2 as the road team this season, have lost all three of their trips to Winnipeg since the franchise relocated from Atlanta following the 2010-11 season.
