Jazz edge Grizzlies
Salt Lake City, UT – Gordon Hayward had 17 points and his 3-pointer late in the contest sealed a much needed 90-84 victory for the Utah Jazz over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday.
Hayward also pulled down eight boards and Al Jefferson poured in 14 points for Utah, which had come in as losers in eight of its last 10 games. Paul Millsap and Mo Williams each scored 13 in the victory.
"A win, we need a win against anybody. We are where we are," said Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin. "We need to win our share of games out to have a chance to make the playoffs. Great win here on our home court against a quality ball club"
Memphis has now dropped two in a row on the heels of a six-game winning streak. Jerryd Bayless had a game-high 24 points and Zach Randolph chipped in with 19 points and nine rebounds in defeat.
The Grizzlies led at halftime, but after a brutal third quarter, they were forced to play from behind and were never able to catch up.
Bayless gave them their best shot when he scored eight straight points to reduce an 11-point deficit to three at 87-84 with 1:16 to play, but he had a costly turnover following a pair of missed Jefferson free throws.
Hayward then put the game away, as Williams found him on the wing for a clinching 3-pointer with 17.3 seconds left.
The Grizzlies led 50-45 at the break, but were a miserable 2-for-16 from the field in the third, as they quickly saw their advantage evaporate.
Bayless' layup kept the Grizzlies within 57-55, but Memphis didn't make another field goal over the final 5 1/2 minutes of the third.
"We were playing a little bit too slow and something we really need to work on, to pick up the pace," said Bayless.
Jefferson's long jumper were the first two of 10 unanswered points for the Jazz and they took a 69-59 lead into the fourth.
Hayward's triple with just under three minutes left had the Jazz ahead, 87-76, before Bayless' personal surge to get them back into the contest.
