Copenhagen, Denmark – Former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic was a hard-fought first-round winner Wednesday at the $220,000 e-Boks Open tennis event.
The third-seeded Jankovic held off promising Brit Laura Robson 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) in just under two hours on the indoor hardcourts at Copenhagen's Farum Arena. The sloppy match featured 11 breaks of serve and 18 double faults, including 10 by Jankovic.
The former U.S. Open runner-up Jankovic will face Russian wild card Yulia Putintseva on Thursday.
A pair of seeds posted second-round wins on Day 3, as No. 5 Kaia Kanepi of Estonia outlasted Hungarian Timea Babos 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) and No. 6 German Mona Barthel blitzed Italian Alberta Brianti 6-3, 6-2.
Also on Wednesday, France's Alize Cornet snuck past Austrian Patricia Mayr- Schleitner 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in a second-rounder, Croat Martic leveled Australian qualifier Johanna Konta 6-2, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals, and Serb Bojana Jovanovski handled Swiss Stefanie Voegele 6-3, 6-4 to land in the second round.
In a second-round affair on Thursday, top-seeded Danish star Caroline Wozniacki will face France's Pauline Parmentier. The former world No. 1 Wozniacki is the two-time reigning Copenhagen titlist, having beaten Czech Lucie Safarova in last year's finale.
The 2012 Copenhagen champion will earn $37,000.
