The 20th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies shoot conference play at Reed Arena this afternoon.
On November 9th, the Aggies began the new season with a resounding 81-59 win against Liberty at home as part of the 2K Sports Classic. The victory was the 61st straight non-conference win for A&M at Reed Arena, dating back to the start of the 2005-06 campaign. If only taking into consideration regular season games, the run would actually stretch to 74 in a row.
Southern University, which is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, is coming off a 67-48 win over Dillard University in the season opener on Friday. The Jaguars are at least off on the right foot in 2011-12 after the team posted a mere four wins in 30 chances last season and was just 1-11 in non-conference battles.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, A&M has won two of the three previous engagements with the Jags, including a lopsided 88-44 decision at Reed Arena six years ago.
Before a crowd of less than 500 at the F.G. Clark Activity Center, the Jaguars held Dillard University to just 36.6 percent shooting from the floor and forced 16 turnovers in the season-opening win earlier this week. Offensively the hosts were paced by Russell Hill and Mike Celestin who both delivered 14 points, although the former missed all three of his three-point tries off the bench and the latter knocked down 4-of-7 out on the perimeter. Quinton Doggett tacked on 13 points and cleared a team-best six rebounds. The squad took good care of the ball with just five turnovers, but still Southern has to be concerned with the fact that it converted just 4-of-12 beyond the arc and a disappointing 15-of-25 at the free-throw line.
The Aggies shot an impressive 65.4 percent from the field in the win over Liberty in the opener, the fifth-highest mark in school history, even after they missed their first three shots of the meeting. Ray Turner scored a game- high 20 points for the hosts, hitting all but two of his 11 field goal tries, while Elston Turner and David Loubeau contributed 16 and 14 points, respectively. Even though the team shot the ball extremely well from the floor overall, the fact is the Aggies were a mere 1-of-7 behind the three-point line and just 12-of-22 at the charity stripe. Not all the news was good for A&M as Khris Middleton went down with what was thought to be a hamstring injury but turned into a partially-torn meniscus in his right knee. Middleton had successful surgery on Friday morning and will now be out of action for three to four weeks.
