New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs is facing a possible sanction from the NFL for flinging his helmet into the stands during Sunday's 38-14 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, NBC Sports reported.

Jacobs reacted angrily to being pulled from the game in the third quarter, having run for just 8 yards on four carries.

He apologized for the incident and said he was aiming for the ground, but the helmet got stuck in his fingers and ended up 10 rows deep in the stands at Lucas Oil Stadium.

"I was frustrated and went to throw it down on the ground, and it got caught on my finger and went into [the stands]," he said. "I apologize for that. It was frustration on my part."

Nobody was hurt but fans started yelling abuse at Jacobs, and security had to struggle to get the helmet back.

Jacobs was chastised on the sideline by Coach Tom Coughlin over the incident and did not return for the rest of the game.
