Notre Dame forward Tim Abromaitis will miss the first four games of the regular season due to a misunderstanding over an NCAA rule.
The confusion stems from his sophomore year, when he participated in two exhibition games prior to the 2008-09 season. Notre Dame withheld him from playing in the regular season to preserve an extra year of eligibility. However, the rule applies only for freshmen. Therefore, Abromaitis technically used a season of eligibility when he played in the exhibition contests.
"This certainly was an unfortunate misunderstanding that I had of the NCAA rule," said Irish head coach Mike Brey. "I discovered that I had misinterpreted the rule midway through the 2008-09 season and immediately reported it to our compliance office.
"The NCAA has been very accommodating in working with us in order to provide Tim with the waiver that will allow him to play this season contingent upon him sitting out the first four games."
Abromaitis will miss games against Mississippi Valley State, Detroit, Sam Houston State and Delaware State. The first game for which he will be eligible is a November 21 contest against Missouri.
Last season, the 6-foot-8 forward averaged 15.4 points and 6.1 rebounds. He is Notre Dame's top returning scorer.
