Montreux, Switzerland (SportsNetwork.com) - After concluding what it called a four-day brainstorming session, the International Olympic Committee announced Saturday it was eyeing increased sustainability and additional funds to fight doping and protect athletes from manipulation and corruption.
The IOC's executive board, under new president Thomas Bach of Germany, said it would encourage cities with bids underway for the 2022 Winter Olympics to "make the broadest possible use of temporary and/or dismountable facilities" in an effort to increase sustainability.
The IOC said a program funding research to discover new techniques to detect banned substances will have an initial budget of $10 million. It will also allocate $10 million to help prevent match-fixing.
Bach, elected in September to replace Jacques Rogge, promised a broad dialogue when he was campaigning for the post. The IOC said ideas generated in Montreux will form the basis of a roadmap for Bach's presidency that is expected to be finalized next year.
The ideas will be discussed at the IOC's full session at the Sochi Olympics but some other things have already been decided. Among them:
- Sport climbing, roller sports and skateboarding will join wushu (martial arts) as showcase disciplines at the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games in China
- The executive board agreed to study the feasibility of an Olympic television channel
- Regulations will be changed to improve the transparency in candidates' campaigns for IOC membership
