Hurricanes' Ward suffers injury, out 3-4 weeks

St. Paul, MN ( - Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward sustained a lower-body injury during Thursday's game against the Minnesota Wild that could sideline him for a month.

Ward was forced to exit the contest just 4:07 in when attempting to make a save on a shot by the Wild's Mikael Granlund that went wide. The Hurricanes announced later in the game that the 2006 Conn Smythe Trophy winner is expected to miss 3-to-4 weeks.

The Hurricanes are already without backup netminder Anton Khoudobin due to a lower-body injury of his own. Justin Peters, recalled from Charlotte of the American Hockey League earlier this month, replaced Ward between the pipes against the Wild, and the team said it would promote goaltender Mike Murphy from the Checkers prior to Friday's matchup at Colorado.

Ward had entered Thursday's tilt with a 2-2-3 record and a 2.84 goals against average in seven games (six starts). He stopped all five chances he faced prior to departing.
