Gelsenkirchen, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Schalke forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will be sidelined for the remainder of 2013 because of a knee injury, Schalke manager Jens Keller said.
The 30-year-old Huntelaar has been battling a knee injury recently and had hoped to return to action this week for the Champions League clash with Chelsea on Tuesday.
But Huntelaar sustained a big setback this week as he limped out of training and the club has said that surgery is an option.
Keller has not yet revealed if the Netherlands international will undergo an operation, but he has said that Huntelaar will not available for the rest of 2013.
"It doesn't really matter what the decision is on Klaas-Jan Huntelaar," Keller said. "He can't play until Christmas. It doesn't matter if he decides to have an operation.
"He might recover without one. Both outcomes are possible. The decision has not been made yet."
Huntelaar has tallied two goals in two Bundesliga games this season.
