New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month and Buffalo Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso was named the Defensive Rookie of the Month for September on Thursday.
Hopkins finished the month with 20 receptions for 270 yards and a touchdown. The 27th overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft, Hopkins leads all rookies in receiving yards, total yards from scrimmage and is tied for the most receptions.
Hopkins is the sixth Texan and third offensive player to earn rookie of the month honors (seventh awarded) in franchise history. He is the first Texan to earn rookie of the month honors since linebacker Brian Cushing was tabbed with the distinction in 2009 (November and December). The last Texans offensive rookie to win the award was running back Steve Slaton in December 2008.
Alonso, a second-round selection from Oregon, tied for an NFL-best with four interceptions in the month, finishing September with 32 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and four passes defensed.
Alonso is the sixth Bills player to be named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month and first since Jairus Byrd in 2009 (October).
