Blacksburg, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Virginia Tech has fired men's basketball coach James Johnson.
Johnson just completed his second season at the helm after spending five years as an assistant coach under Seth Greenberg. He posted a record of 22-41, including just 9-22 this past season.
The Hokies lost their last seven games and were a dismal 2-16 in ACC play.
"I want to thank Coach Johnson for his dedication and hard work for our university and our basketball program over the past seven years," said Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock in a statement Monday. "A change of this significance affects many people and is never taken lightly, but I felt a change and a new direction was necessary for the long term, best interest of our department."
The Virginia native had left Virginia Tech in April 2012 to accept an assistant coaching position at Clemson, but returned to Blacksburg shortly after Greenberg was fired later that month.
Johnson also spent two years as an assistant at George Mason, where he helped the Patriots to a 45-23 record and an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2006, before joining the staff at Virginia Tech.
