NORMAL, Ill. – Deontae Hawkins scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lift Illinois State to an 85-73 overtime victory over Youngstown State on Saturday.
DJ Cole scored to pull Youngstown State within 74-73 with 2:14 left in overtime before Illinois State surged on an 11-0 run to win it.
Bobby Hunter scored 20 points, DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell scored 7 of his 18 points in overtime, and Reggie Lynch had 10 points and seven blocks for Illinois State (3-2).
Hawkins made two free throws to give the Redbirds a 65-64 lead with 34 seconds left in regulation. Cole made 1 of 2 free throws to tie it at 65 with 21 seconds to go. Hawkins had a turnover, but Marcus Keene couldn't connect on a 3 at the buzzer to send it to overtime.
Keene scored a career-high 29 points to lead Youngstown State (4-4).
It was the first meeting between the schools.
