MONTREAL (Reuters) - The Washington Capitals had their 14-game win streak snapped on Wednesday, falling 6-5 in overtime to the Montreal Canadiens.
Montreal center Tomas Plekanec scored the game-winner with eight seconds left in OT, a wrist shot of an assist from Sergei Kostitsyn.
Brooks Laich had forced the game into overtime by completing a hat-trick for the Capitals with just 18 seconds left in the third, where Washington scored three unanswered goals.
The defeat for the Capitals meant they fell three games short of tying the Pittsburgh Penguins' NHL record of 17 consecutive victories set in 1993.
