Brittney Griner scored 15 points, including what is believed to be the first dunk in the women's world championship, as the U.S. used a dominant second half to beat China 87-56 on Saturday in their world championship opener.
Griner dunked one-handed early in the first quarter off a pass from Maya Moore, who finished with 15 points also for the Americans (1-0).
The 6-foot-8 star missed all of the U.S. training camp while she was recovering from a retinal injury suffered in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals.
The U.S. only led by seven at the half before outscoring China 21-8 in the third quarter to blow the game open.
Tina Charles added 15 rebounds for the Americans, who will play Serbia on Sunday.
Xiaojia Chen and Mengran Sun each scored 10 points to lead China, which will play Angola on Sunday.
