Daytona Beach, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jaye Marie Green fired a 10-under-par 62 on Wednesday to grab a 4-stroke lead after the opening round of the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.
Green, who played on the Symetra Tour as a rookie in 2013, mixed 11 birdies against just one bogey at LPGA International's Rees Jones Course.
Seon Hwa Lee, a four-time LPGA Tour winner, shot 6-under 66 to snare a share of second place alongside Tiffany Joh.
Nicole Jeray, Kathleen Ekey, Megan Grehan, Haru Nomura and Line Vedel carded matching 5-under 67s to share fourth place, while Amy Anderson, Hannah Yun, Victoria Tanco and Pinrath Loomboonruang grabbed ninth at 4-under 68.
The first 72 holes of this tournament are being contested on LPGA International's Jones and Arthur Hills Courses, after which the 153-player field will be reduced to 70 and ties for Sunday's final round on the Jones Course. The low 45 players at event's end will earn LPGA Tour cards for 2014, with the top 20 receiving exempt status.
Green, who as an amateur titled at the Sally Championship and finished second at the Symetra Tour's Daytona Beach Invitational, started on the Jones Course's 10th tee Wednesday and opened with four straight birdies.
The 19-year-old Green barely slowed from there, recording further birdies at Nos. 16 and 18 to turn in 30, then opening her inward stretch with three birdies in a five-hole span from the first. She tripped to her only bogey of the day at the par-3 sixth, but recovered with back-to-back birdies from the eighth to seal the first-round lead.
NOTES: Players who make the cut and are not in the top 45 will receive Symetra Tour status ... Lee's last LPGA Tour win came in 2008, when she secured titles at the Ginn Tribute and the NW Arkansas Championship ... Joh is a two-time winner on the Futures Tour ... Cheyenne Woods, relative of world No. 1 Tiger Woods, shot 5-over 77. She is tied for 135th place.
