Giants activate Vogelsong to start Friday

Ryan Vogelsong is set to make his first major league start in close to two months, with the San Francisco Giants reinstating the veteran pitcher from the 60-day disabled list to take the mound for Friday's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Vogelsong fractured two bones and sustained a dislocated joint in the pinkie finger of his right hand while at the plate in a May 20 contest against the Washington Nationals. The 35-year-old pronounced himself ready to return, however, by allowing just one run in 11 innings over a pair of recent rehab assignments with Double-A Richmond.

The right-hander had been struggling badly prior to the injury, posting a 2-4 record along with a 7.19 earned run average over his first nine starts of 2013. Vogelsong allowed five or more or runs in six of those outings.

To make room for Vogelsong on the 25-man roster, the Giants optioned reliever Jean Machi to Triple-A Fresno.

Machi has appeared in 33 games out of the bullpen for San Francisco this season, going 2-1 with a 3.34 ERA.
