(SportsNetwork.com) - Baseball's free agency pool expanded Monday after the non-tender deadline.
Teams had until just before midnight to offer players contracts for next season or allow them to become free agents.
Former National League Rookie of the Year Chris Coghlan was among the notable players to hit the open market after the Miami Marlins declined to offer him a contract for 2014. Coghlan was the NL's top rookie in 2009.
Toronto also cut ties with catcher J.P. Arencibia, who had been the team's starter for most of the past three seasons but became expendable when the Blue Jays on Monday signed Dioner Navarro.
The St. Louis Cardinals failed to offer pitcher John Axford a contract. Axford, the former closer for the Milwaukee Brewers, was acquired by St. Louis in August.
Arizona decided to non-tender pitcher Daniel Hudson, a 16-game winner in 2011 who could miss the 2014 season after undergoing a second Tommy John procedure.
The New York Mets disposed of five players, including starting pitcher Jeremy Hefner and infielders Omar Quintanilla and Justin Turner, while the Yankees didn't offer a contract to infielder Jayson Nix after agreeing to a deal with Brendan Ryan.
Boston cut injured closer Andrew Bailey loose and also non-tendered outfielder Ryan Kalish, while fellow AL East member Tampa Bay didn't offer deals to outfielder Sam Fuld and pitcher Wesley Wright.
The Angels let starters Jerome Williams and Tommy Hanson become free agents and the Dodgers did the same with reliever Ronald Belisario. The Cubs parted ways with pitcher Daniel Bard and the White Sox non-tendered pitcher Dylan Axelrod.
A number of players agreed to contracts to avoid arbitration, including San Diego pitchers Eric Stults and Tim Stauffer, Phillies infielder Kevin Frandsen and White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers.
