A.J. Foyt has hired Alex Tagliani as his third driver for this year's Indianapolis 500.

The 41-year-old Canadian won the Indy pole in 2011 and finished the race 13th last year, driving for Sarah Fisher's team. That was his last IndyCar start.

Foyt now has Tagliani, Japan's Takuma Sato and England's Jack Hawksworth all trying to make the 33-car starting grid for the May 24 race.

Tagliani will drive a black-and-white car that Foyt is using as a tribute to Dan Gurney, his co-driver in the tandem's 1967 victory at the 24 Hours of LeMans. Gurney was second twice at Indy and finally won the race as a team owner with Bobby Unser in 1975. Gurney has not attended the 500 since 2011.
