Foltynewicz solid as Braves beat Brewers

Atlanta, GA ( - Mike Foltynewicz tossed 7 2/3 solid innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Sunday.

Foltynewicz (3-1) gave up one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking one for the Braves, who won three of four in the series to move over .500 for the first time since April 27. Andrelton Simmons and A.J. Pierzynski had one RBI apiece.

"I was attacking the zone with the fastball and getting early outs," said Foltynewicz. "The slider and the curveball were working OK. They got a couple good hits off me at the end."

Elian Herrera drove in the lone run for the Brewers, who went 4-6 on a 10-game road trip. Jimmy Nelson (2-5) allowed two runs on five hits with five walks and four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

The Braves broke a scoreless tie with a two-run sixth. Cameron Maybin led off with a single and moved to second on Nelson's errant pickoff throw. Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis walked to load the bases for Todd Cunningham, who lined out to short.

Maybin scored when Pierzynski hit a line drive to second baseman Hector Gomez, who knocked the ball down. Simmons followed with an RBI single to left, chasing Nelson from the game. Jeremy Jeffress struck out Pedro Ciriaco to end the inning.

Milwaukee got one run back in the seventh. Carlos Gomez was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on Khris Davis' single and scored on Herrera's sacrifice fly.

"We've got to find ways to get men on base," said Brewers manager Craig Counsell. "Or if we're going to be a slugging lineup, we have to get our pitch and can't miss it."

Jason Grilli tossed a scoreless ninth for his 13th save of the season.
