KOHLER, Wisconsin (Reuters) - The opening round of the 92nd U.S. PGA Championship was certain to spill over into a second day after thick fog delayed the scheduled start by more than three hours on Thursday.
Visibility was limited to less than 50 yards on the practice range despite early morning sunshine at Whistling Straits before the fog finally lifted.
Americans Bo Van Pelt, Scott Hebert and Vaughn Taylor, initially scheduled to tee off from the par-four first at 0700 local (1200 GMT), were set to start at 1010 (1510 GMT).
"Once the fog has lifted and it is clear to play, the first starting time will be 30 minutes following that time," officials said.
They added there was no chance of bringing forward the afternoon tee times by any more than half an hour once the morning starters had set off.
Four-times champion Tiger Woods, who has failed to win this season in eight appearances on the PGA Tour, was scheduled to start his opening round from the 10th hole at 1130 (1630).
U.S. Masters champion Phil Mickelson was set to tee off from the first at 1645 (2145) with Britain's U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell and British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa.
In other high-profile groupings, 2008 champion Padraig Harrington of Ireland has been drawn with former winners Davis Love III and John Daly while American world number four Steve Stricker will play with Australian Adam Scott and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy.
