The Chicago Fire announced on Monday that winger Marco Pappa has signed a pre-contract with Dutch side Heerenveen.
The 24-year-old, who has scored six goals with three assists this season, will play out the remainder of the current MLS campaign with Chicago before making the move to the Netherlands on January 1, 2013 when the winter transfer window opens.
"I'm very excited about taking the next step in my career and signing with SC Heerenveen. My focus is with the Fire and working hard to secure a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs," Pappa said in a statement. "The Fire gave me a great opportunity in 2008 and I am thankful to Fire owner Andrew Hauptman and Frank Klopas for the support and encouragement they have offered the past four years. I plan to do the club proud and put everything I have into the remaining matches with the Fire."
Pappa has tallied 26 goals and 14 assists in 110 MLS games for Chicago since joining the club on loan from Municipal in his native Guatemala.
He has also impressed on the international level for his country, amassing 28 caps and scoring five goals.
Chicago will retain Pappa's MLS rights after making him a qualifying offer.
