Bridgeview, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago Fire added to their Major League Soccer record on Sunday as the club was held to another draw, 0-0, with the Montreal Impact at Toyota Park.
Coming off a 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union on Thursday which set a league record for most draws in a single season, the Fire battled to another stalemate on Sunday, extending their record total to 18 as the club remains in ninth place in the Eastern Conference with 33 points.
Montreal has struggled all season and remains in the basement of the East with 25 points, despite picking up a point away from home.
It was touch-and-go for both sides through the opening 45 minutes. Neither side created much in the way of scoring chances and seemed content to knock the ball around hoping for a defensive mistake.
The lackluster offensive play spilled over into the second half as the best chance for either side came in the 65th minute. The Fire lined up for a free kick in a good position just outside the penalty area.
Jeff Larentowicz ripped a hard strike on goal, but it was straight at Montreal goalkeeper Evan Bush, who easily parried it out of play.
Things picked up in intensity over the final 10 minutes as both sides pushed forward looking for a last-gasp winner. The fourth official's board showed four minutes of additional time, but the clubs were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
