Paris, France – Fourth-seeded David Ferrer secured a spot in the third round of the French Open with a 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Albert Montanes.
Ferrer, a semifinalist last year, is into the third round here for the ninth consecutive year.
He will next take on Feliciano Lopez, who beat Joao Sousa by a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 margin.
Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Croat Marin Cilic also posted second-round wins. The sixth-seeded Tsonga discarded Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, 6-3 and No. 10 seed Cilic handled Nick Kyrgios of Australia 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
Tsonga will be appearing in the third round at Roland Garros for the fifth year in a row.
In first-round action Wednesday, No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia handled Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, 24th-seeded Frenchman Benoit Paire defeated Marcos Baghdatis by a 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-4 margin and Lukasz Kubot of Poland got past Frenchman Maxime Teixeira 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.
