New York, NY – Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and Chicago Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija were named National League Co-Players of the Week for the week ending August 25.
Fernandez went 2-0 and was tied for the lead in the majors with 16 strikeouts. He walked just three and allowed one earned run in 13 innings of work. The 21- year-old rookie is 10-5 with a 2.30 earned run average in 25 starts this season. It's his second weekly award this season.
Samardzija was also 2-0 over 17 innings pitched, which was tied for the lead in the majors. He tossed his second complete game of the season and third of his career in an 11-1 win over Washington on Monday. The 28-year-old is 8-11 with a 4.03 ERA in 27 games this season. It is his first weekly award.
Also up for the award were Carlos Beltran of the St. Louis Cardinals, Michael Cuddyer of Colorado, Washington's Bryce Harper, Arizona's Martin Prado and Cincinnati's Aroldis Chapman.
