Swiss great Roger Federer decided to week break in order to rest some "nagging injuries."

Federer was last year's runner-up to Andy Murray in Shanghai.

On his website, the third-ranked former world No. 1 Federer said he needs "necessary time to rest and recuperate after a long summer."

Federer is a 16-time Grand Slam champion who finished as a runner-up to his great rival Rafael Nadal at this year's French Open.

The 30-year-old Federer, a heartbreaking semifinal loser against current No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the U.S. Open two weeks ago, played two singles matches and a doubles rubber in last week's Davis Cup playoff between his Swiss squad and host Australia.

Federer plans to return to action in late October at his hometown Swiss Indoors tournament in his native Basel.
