Sao Paulo, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - One week after running the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Formula One is in South America for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Sunday's Brazilian GP in Sao Paulo is the penultimate race of the season. F1 has been competing at this 2.677-mile (4.3-kilometer), 15-turn Interlagos circuit each year since 1990.
After winning his fifth consecutive grand prix this past Sunday, Lewis Hamilton holds a 24-point lead over teammate and championship rival Nico Rosberg.
The 2014 F1 season concludes with the Nov. 23 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a race that will award double the amount of points. The winner of the Brazilian GP will receive 25 points, while the winner of the Abu Dhabi will collect 50.
Hamilton is attempting to win his second F1 world championship.
"I do not come to the last two races with a particular game plan," Hamilton said. "I come to this race (Brazilian GP) with the same approach as the last few races, or even the whole season. I want to win a championship by winning races, and not necessarily by finishing fifth or whatever other result. It is probably the most intense part of the season right now."
In 2008 while driving for McLaren, Hamilton finished fifth in the season- ending Brazilian GP and clinched his first title by only one point over Felipe Massa, who drove for Ferrari at the time. Massa, a Brazilian, won his home race that year.
On Friday, Rosberg led the way in both practice sessions for the Brazilian GP. He topped the charts in P1 with a lap in 1 minute, 12.764 seconds and again in P2 (1:12.123). Rain is in the forecast for Saturday's qualifying session here.
"That was a good day, and we are very quick again at this circuit," Rosberg said. "The track has a new surface, which made it quite tricky. It's smooth and not quite so bumpy, as it has been in the past. But the tires were blistering because of the high temperatures and the new asphalt. That was a bit worrying. We are expecting it to be a bit cooler over the weekend. I'm looking forward to tomorrow. It should be a great battle."
Hamilton's best lap in P1 was 0.221 seconds behind Rosberg. He trailed Rosberg by 0.213 seconds in P2.
"The car felt good today," Hamilton said. "There are a few improvements we can make, but I just didn't manage to put a lap together out there. That's not a big issue, though. It's just practice, so that's what we're out there trying to do."
