Top seed Sara Errani secured a berth in the quarterfinals at the $220,000 Budapest Grand Prix tennis event, a clay- court French Open tune-up.
The Italian Errani, who titled in Barcelona three weeks ago, held off Hungarian qualifier Melinda Czink 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 at Romai Tennis Academy.
Errani's opponent on Thursday will be fellow Italian Alberta Brianti, who came back to beat Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 on Day 3.
Second-round upsets came when Elena Vesnina took out second-seeded fellow Russian Ksenia Pervak 6-2, 6-3 and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova bounced fourth- seeded fellow Czech Klara Zakopalova 6-3, 6-3.
Upsets were avoided when fifth-seeded Marina Erakovic of New Zealand topped Uzbekistanian qualifier Akgul Amanmuradova 6-0, retired and sixth-seeded Croat Petra Martic dismissed Taipei's Su-Wei Hsieh 6-4, 6-1.
In other round-of-16 play, Georgian Anna Tatishvili drilled Hungarian wild card Vanda Lukacs 6-1, 6-2 and capable Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak overcame Romanian Alexandra Cadantu 6-7 (2-7), 6-0, 6-0.
Thursday's other quarterfinals will pit Erakovic against Zahlavova Strycova, Martic versus Vesnina and Tatishvili against Wozniak.
The newest Budapest champion will collect $37,000.
