Eastern Illinois senior quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could have a record-setting game against Eastern Kentucky in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams Saturday at O'Brien Field.
The Walter Payton Award candidate, who is in the top 10 in many FCS passing categories, has thrown for 9,837 yards in his career. He is only 153 yards shy of setting a new OVC record and only 163 shy of 10,000 for his career.
He also has thrown for 85 career touchdowns, tying former Eastern Illinois great Tony Romo, the 2002 Payton Award winner, for the conference and school records. Garopollo needs to throw one more to own the record by himself.
Eastern Illinois (3-1), the defending OVC champion, is ranked eighth in the FCS. Eastern Kentucky has a 2-2 record.
