Los Angeles, CA – With pitcher Zack Greinke slated to start Wednesday in his return from the disabled list, the Los Angeles Dodgers placed right-hander Josh Beckett on the 15-day DL with a strained left groin.
Greinke was officially reinstated from the DL Wednesday and will make his return to the mound as the Dodgers host the Washington Nationals in the finale of a three-game series.
Greinke, who signed a megadeal with Dodgers this past offseason, is about a month ahead of schedule after breaking his collarbone in his second start of the season during a brawl with the San Diego Padres on April 11.
After pegging Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin, he muttered something toward the batter before tempers flared and the two were involved in a benches clearing scrum.
The standout right-hander did pitch 4 1/3 innings in a rehab assignment with Class A Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday, though he was tagged for eight runs -- three earned -- on six hits.
Greinke went 1-0 with a 1.59 earned run average and 10 strikeouts over his first two outings prior to the injury.
Beckett, meanwhile, made it through just three innings in Monday's 6-2 loss to the Nationals after giving up four runs -- two earned -- on three hits and two walks before leaving the contest.
The veteran right-hander has struggled mightily this season, posting an 0-5 record with a 5.19 ERA over eight starts.
